It is necessary to arrive at a diagnosis before commencing acupuncture treatment. The initial consultation must include an adequate history, examination and appropriate investigation.
GUIDELINES - Acupuncture treatment must be performed by a medical practitioner with adequate training in acupuncture.(1)
Acupuncture should not be performed by lay practitioners. The number and frequency of acupuncture treatments is to be determined by the assessment of the patient and his or her response to treatment. If the patient fails to respond after a reasonable(2) number of treatments appropriate referral for further investigation or management should be made. Members are advised to obtain informed verbal consent from patients prior to commencing treatment. In the majority of acupuncture treatments it is necessary for needles to remain in situ for varying periods of time. The patient’s condition must be monitored during this time.
